California SB 553 is a new bill that requires all employers to have a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, a Violent Incident Log, and Employee Training. The Workplace Violence Prevention Plan must be in writing and be made available to all employees. The plan must include:
• Names of those responsible for implementing the plan, including specific roles and responsibilities
• Effective procedures for getting employee buy-in and involvement in the plan’s development and implementation
• Coordination methods between employers to ensure that employees know what’s expected of them in the event of an incident
• A system that allows the employer to accept and respond to workplace violence reports, as well as to protect any reporting employees from retaliation
• Procedures that account for supervisory and nonsupervisory employees alike
• A process for communicating with employees
• Protocol for responding to actual or potential workplace violence emergencies
